How We Deal With Wasp Nests

The reason not to do this yourself isn’t squeamishness, it’s that a nest under attack goes on the defensive. A shop-bought spray irritates the colony without reaching the queen, and you end up with a few hundred angry wasps and the same nest you started with. Ladder falls put more people in A&E each summer than the stings do.

We treat the nest at the entrance, where the workers carry the insecticide inside on their own bodies. Activity usually stops within a couple of hours and the colony is dead within a day. In most cases the nest can stay where it is — wasps never reuse an old one, and cutting it out of a loft or a cavity often does more damage than leaving it.

If the nest is a bee colony, we won’t treat it. Honey bees are protected in practice and we’ll put you in touch with a local beekeeper instead — usually at no cost to you. Send a photo if you’re not sure which you’ve got.

Wasp nest removal FAQs

Watch one spot for a minute. A steady stream of wasps going in and out of the same gap — under a tile, a hole in the soffit, a crack in the brickwork — means a nest behind it. Wasps just drifting round the bins or the fruit tree are foragers and could be coming from anywhere within a few hundred metres.

Most of the activity stops within a couple of hours. The colony is usually dead within 24 hours. You'll see a few stragglers returning from foraging over the next day or two — they'll die at the entrance, and that's normal rather than a sign it hasn't worked.

Usually not, and often it's better we don't. Wasps never reuse an old nest, so once the colony is dead it's just paper. Cutting one out of a loft or a cavity wall can mean pulling up insulation or opening brickwork for no real benefit. If it's somewhere visible or the nest is right above a doorway, we'll remove it.

You can buy the aerosols, but they rarely reach the queen, and a nest that's been disturbed defends itself. People get stung repeatedly and, more often, they fall off the ladder. If you've already tried and it's still active, tell us — a partly treated nest behaves differently and we'd rather know before we turn up.

Then we won't treat them. Honey bees get relocated by a beekeeper, and we'll put you in touch with one locally. Bumblebees die off naturally by the end of summer and rarely need anything doing at all. Send us a photo and we'll tell you which you've got before anyone comes out.
